Electoral Reform in Ontario

Submitted by mgifford on

Ontario has recently adopted fixed election dates and it is interesting to see how this is impacting how politicians organize to get elected. I was just contacted by the NDP candidate for my riding, Will Murray, and the election won't take place until October 10th. The federal election could still happen before then, but candidates working for a federal seat don't have a clear road map since the election doesn't have to be called for a couple of years yet. I do think that fixed election dates will enhance our democracy.

It is also interesting that Proportional Representation is a referendum question this fall. We have an opportunity here in Ontario to once again lead the rest of Canada by implementing a better system of picking our representatives. OpenConcept worked for many years with Fair Vote Canada and is pleased that Fair Vote Ontario is taking a strong lead on promoting this issue. They have a nice petition that you can sign if you want to take action on this issue.

As usual there is a good article on wikipedia about the referendum. And there is now a Facebook group so hopefully more people will consider demonstrating their support to their networks by joining this group. This is an important issue and it will be important to mobilize people over the next six months so that we can have a better electoral system.
