Idealist has done brought virtual people together physically this year through their imagine a better world initiative. The Live 8 concerts certainly got a lot of attention last year about world poverty. MoveOn was quite successful with bringing people together in solidarity in the past with candle light vigils. I've blogged about efforts to bring the virtual and physical worlds together. it will be interesting to see what Avaaz and others engaged in the Live Earth initiative will be able to organize in the next 9 days.
Saturday 7th July, they want to mobilize millions to get together to watch the Live Earth concerts for a climate in crisis. As always the Avaaz messaging is positive "we can to turn this global moment into an unstoppable global movement", and I do hope they are right.
There are already a number of parties being organized across Canada and over 6000 from around the world. If there isn't one near you, they are looking for more.
Very odd that the campaign has chosen to use MSN is their exclusive online partner and that the MSN site is covered with Chevy ads. Maybe that is what is required if you want to fill several stadiums and draw in musicians like Shakira, Madonna, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the Police, but I would hope not. I have yet to see anything about this on facebook or any of my other networks, but that could just be a matter of time.
