Free Community Building Through Flickr's Photo Sharing

Submitted by mgifford on

Ottawa Folk Festival Art
I went to the Ottawa Folk Festival last weekend and had a great time watching some amazing performances and meeting lots of wonderful people. Like many successful festivals it is filled with people who make this a regular event and where one can see people in your community that you don't always run into.

One of the first people that I ran into was Jake Morison who was one of the volunteer photographers for the event.  Jake's a good photographer, but it was amazing to see how much photography gear many people at the festival had.  Over the course of the three days there must have been hundreds of thousands of photos taken by the official photographers, media, artists, but mostly by the thousands of people who attended this festival.

With all of the digital cameras around it is a real lost opportunity not to be encouraging folks to share them by tagging their photos, videos & blog posts with ottawafolkfestival or ottawafolk.  It's a nice way to build community online, and festivals are all about community & great memories.  Like with the Facebook groups that was set up, it is free to set this up and encourage people to participate.  Unlike Facebook though the Flickr interface allows users much more control over the rights to their pictures (especially allowing people to select a Creative Commons license).

Ottawa Non-Profit Tech Social Gathering

Submitted by mgifford on

It's been years now that I've heard of the Social Tech Brewing Company phenomena in Vancouver and Toronto. Apparently it's even spread as far as Australia. However November 1st marked the first meeting of its kind here in Ottawa. George Irish & I have been discussing this ever since he moved up from Toronto, but we finally set a date and a facebook group to try to coordinate the network. The response from the Ottawa progressive geek community was more successful than we had anticipated.

One blogpost for Burma - A Campaign for Democracy

Re Shirt for BurmaWent to a protest last night in solidarity with the pro-democracy protesters in Burma. I was partly brought to the protest by facebook as I got a number of invites to events in the coming days with it.

'Support The Monks' Protest in Burma' - Facebook group has certainly been useful. It's been interesting to see the circulation of news items being re-posted on Facebook on this issue as people are desperate to find out what is happening in Burma. Interesting to see the celebrity involvement as Jim Carry's video pleads the case for action. Not sure why it would be beneficial to email inquiries@un.org, but there is a hope that it may get noticed.

Vote Out Poverty in Ontario

Note:The event was quite successful and was able to shift all political parties to address this important issue.

OpenConcept is happy to have been involved in a small way with the Vote Out Poverty Campaign that is being geared for the upcoming provincial election. This is a critical issue and it is important that groups like the Ontario Coalition for Social Justice are working to raise this issue with candidates that are running to win a seat.

Electoral Reform in Ontario

Submitted by mgifford on

Ontario has recently adopted fixed election dates and it is interesting to see how this is impacting how politicians organize to get elected. I was just contacted by the NDP candidate for my riding, Will Murray, and the election won't take place until October 10th. The federal election could still happen before then, but candidates working for a federal seat don't have a clear road map since the election doesn't have to be called for a couple of years yet. I do think that fixed election dates will enhance our democracy.

Jack has confirmed you as a friend on Facebook.

I just recently set up an account on facebook, as an old friend sent me an invitation. After checking to see if Jack Layton had a page, and adding him as "a friend". I decided to check out the popularity of our political leaders on this platform (as of March 20th). Now organizations are using this service in different ways, but it is interesting to compare popularity. Jack has 175 friends.
The central NDP group has 1,054 members

Stéphane has 3332 friends.
The central Liberal group has 351 members
